Augustijn beer dates back to 1295, when it was brewed by the Augustinian monks in their monastery in Ghent. In 1978, the Augustinians began the search for a new partner to brew their beer, Jozef Van Steenberge won the competition organized by the Augustinians. This is how the brewery gained access to the recipe for this historic monastery beer, as well as the knowledge of Janus Jeremanus, its administrator. Augustijn Donker is a dark beer with aroma of red fruits and slightly smoky. Its flavor is dense and smooth, with hints of raisins and chocolate very well balanced. The aftertaste is slightly bitter and smoothly dry.
